The Physiotherapy Academy is run by two highly qualified and expert physiotherapists in the musculoskeletal field who have been associates for over seven years. Our Physiotherapists are all members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and are Health Professions Council registered.
The Physiotherapy Academy currently provide the medical services for the Essex Pirates Professional Basketball team who play in the British Basketball League.

Charlotte Belford (Physiotherapist)
Charlotte qualified from the University of East London with a degree in Physiotherapy. Charlotte then went on to gain experience locally working within the NHS.

Charlotte maintains a part time role as an Extended Scope Practitioner alongside a leading Orthopaedic Consultant in Chelmsford. Charlotte has gained invaluable experience within the sporting world of physiotherapy having worked for West Ham United for the past eight seasons. Here, Charlotte worked alongside world class Doctors, Consultants, Sports Scientists and Strength and Conditioning coaches to achieve the highest level of care and rehabilitation. Charlotte has also treated many other high level athletes and sportspeople from a variety of disciplines including martial arts, athletics and swimming. Charlotte is also qualified to carry out the treatments of hydrotherapy and acupuncture.

Paul Fisher (Physiotherapist)
Paul qualified from the University of East London with a first class honours degree in physiotherapy.

Paul has gained experience within the NHS at the Royal London and Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals and has also worked at a specialist sports injuries clinic in London where he worked closely with the Chief Medical Officer of the FA and the Tottenham Hotspurs First Team Doctor. Paul has extensive experience within professional sport having worked at Charlton Athletic, West Ham United and with his current club Tottenham Hotspurs. He is currently physiotherapist to Great Britain U20’s basketball team and has worked at major sporting events such as the Basketball European Championships and The Flora London Marathon. Paul is also qualified to provide a range of physiotherapy treatments including soft tissue techniques, spinal manipulation and acupuncture.

Chris Clarke-Irons (Physiotherapist)
Chris graduated with a 1st class honours in Physiotherapy, and has experience within competitive sporting environments.

He has worked with Essex County Cricket Club for the past 4 seasons, within a coaching role and played football semi-professionally. Out of the sporting environment, Chris works within the NHS, starting his post graduate profession within a London Teaching Hospital. Chris is now the lead physiotherapy pain specialist within the pain service of Broomfield Hospital. Chris is trained within acupuncture and a member of the Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists.

Antony Gross (Physiotherapist)
Antony graduated from the University of Hertfordshire and now works as a Senior Physiotherapist in Chelmsford.

He has gained valuable experience in his career working with a variety of athletes including elite rugby players and swimmers. As a senior member of the musculoskeletal department, Antony works closely with orthopaedic consultants in an acute hospital setting. In conjunction with his core skills of manual therapy, soft tissue mobilisation and exercise prescription, Antony has completed training in the Kinesio taping method and attends regular courses to maintain high quality evidence based clinical practice. He is currently completing a course in foundation acupuncture and plans to start his Masters studies in 2011. Outside of work Antony has a keen interest in martial arts, football and weightlifting.

Stefano Russo (Sports Masseur)
Stefano has been a Sports Massage Practitioner for the past three years where he obtained his diploma qualification through the YMCA.

Within this time he has gained theoretical and practical experience within the professional sporting environment. Stef has worked with Southend United FC Under 18's as the Sports Masseur for 2 years, where he then moved to West Ham Under 18's as an intern for 2 seasons. Whilst there he worked under the guidance of now 1st team Fitness Coach Eamon Swift.
Stef currently works for Southend United FC where he is 1st team Head Sports Masseur which involves working alongside physiotherapists and strength and conditioning coach Lawrence Bloom. Sports Massage involves a number of specific techniques applied to muscles, tendons and ligaments allowing to reduce the tightness and tension which can help reduce the chance of injury (allowing the individual to get the most out of exercising), as well as working alongside physiotherapists to help treat a wide range of soft tissue injuries. Stef has also recenlty qualified from the University of East London with a degree in Fitness and Health (BSc).
